Sister Mary Anth, CSJ Obituary

Sister Mary Carol Anth, CSJ passed on July 1, 2024. She was 88 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 65 years.  Sister Mary Carol was born in St. Louis, MO on Nov. 11, 1935, to Florence (Koenig) and Tobias Anth. She was baptized on November 24 at the Church of the Magdalen.  She attended St. Anthony’s High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in dietetics with minors in science and philosophy from Fontbonne College (now University) in 1957, a master’s degree in nutrition with minors in food theory and physiological chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and completed a dietetic internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1963. She then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and served until 1965 as both a nutrition educator at Avila College (now University) and as an administrative and clinical dietitian at St. Joseph Hospital.  She served as a volunteer for Nazareth Living Center and on boards and committees for the CSJ community, St. Joseph’s Academy and the Fontbonne Community Connection.  In 1965, Sister Mary Carol began 47 years of service at Fontbonne College/University where she spent 26 years as a faculty member of the Home Economics Department (25 years as chairperson ) and 21 years as assistant), then associate dean for academic affairs. She received a bachelor’s degree in dietetics with minors in science and philosophy from Fontbonne College in 1957. Her contributions were recognized with the 1987 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award for the State of Missouri Dietetics Association, the Fontbonne Founders Award in 1987, the Fontbonne Carondelet Heritage Award in 1999, and the Service to the University Award in 2005. After her retirement in 2011, Sister Mary Carol continued to be an integral part of the Fontbonne Family. She was an active member of the Fontbonne Community Connection (FCC) and a dedicated volunteer for Nazareth Living Center and on boards and committees for the CSJ community, and St. Joseph’s Academy.  She is survived by her brother, Richard (Violet) Anth, and their three children, Catherine (Scott) Nickerson, John (Beth) Anth, and James (Elizabeth) Anth, and eight grand nieces and nephews.  A memorial mass for Sister Mary Carol Anth, CSJ will be celebrated at the Church of the Magdalen on S. Kingshighway on July 20 with a wake beginning at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m.
