Beloved wife of the late Emil F. Meyer, mother to Steven (Lynn Abeln) Meyer and grandmother to Nathan Meyer, 38, Mitchell Abeln, 24, Kameron Meyer, 11, and great grandmother to Jocelyn, passed away after an extended stay at Bethesda Southgate, leaving a void her family cannot fill.
Laverne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Emil, her sisters: Mozell, Rethel, Ruthie, Jonell, and her brother Billy. She is survived by her son and grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
Laverne was born in St. Louis in 1926 to Toy and Joe Willhauck and spent her childhood loved by her mother Toy and stepfather Frank Wuest. She was adored by her sisters and brother. Laverne attained her college degree in Elementary Education from Southwest Baptist College. She enjoyed her career as a teacher in the Mehlville School district.
Laverne was a devoted mother to Steven. She always said his birth changed her life for the better, and Steve felt that in the love and support she and his dad provided. Steve and Laverne shared a friendship full of old stories and laughter. For years the two lunched weekly at McArthur’s Bakery, often crossing paths with Laverne’s former students and parents.
Laverne’s first love was Emil Frank Meyer. Their love story started the day they met and continued for fifty years of marriage until his death in 1998. They shared a relationship envied by many.
Laverne loved to read, travel and spent many summer vacations camping with her family. Weekly she would walk South County mall with her dear friends. She loved God and her prayer community. She was an active member at Bayless Baptist Church. Visitation at Fey Funeral Home on Friday, December 6 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. Private burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
